At the Market: Kingfield

Coming from Madison, Wisconsin, home of the largest "producer only" farmers market in the nation, I have pretty high standards for farmers markets. Madison's farmers market is truly is a magical place, perched upon the beautiful tulip-encased Capitol Square. Thousands flock to the market each Saturday and return home with produce and pastries a-plenty, fresh flowers, and of course, squeeky cheese curds. And if you can stand the wait, you might even snag some spicy cheese bread from Stella's.

Upon moving to Minneapolis, I knew nothing in the world could replace the special place in my heart I have for the Madison farmers market (technically the Dane County Farmers Market), but I was hoping to at least find a cute neighborhood market where I could pick up some fresh veggies and flowers.

I stumbled upon the Kingfield Farmers Market one Sunday morning while exploring the neighborhood and was pleasantly surprised. It's relatively small, but packs quite the produce punch! There was a variety of organic and non-organic produce, salmon, cheese, a few craft stalls, and some pretty awesome rotating prepared food stalls/trucks—Thai breakfast bowls, Bogart's Doughnuts, Chef Shack—to name a few.

Another big bonus: If you forgot cash, you can use a credit card or check to purchase $5 tokens that are good at not only the Kingfield Farmers Market, but at Fulton and Nokomis Farmers Markets, as well. The vendors give you change from the tokens in the form of cash/coins. There is a $2 surcharge, but I suppose it's a small price to pay for cash convenience and farmers market fun. I'm excited to explore various markets in the area, especially Fulton and Nokomis since I acquired a few tokens this morning, but I'm pretty pleased to know this great little market is only a few blocks away.
